Pup Stories

It takes time, patience, experimentation and attentiveness when overcoming significant trust issues.

Louie at the Stark County Sheriff's Office

Each of our pups’ adoptions was preceded by a heartbreaking story. We can’t even say whose story was the worst, since they are equally devastating, but here are 3.

Malibu was scheduled for euthanasia (execution) in Oklahoma. She was only 6 months old and malnourished. She’s now 13 and continues to thrive in our care. Bungee had been kept locked up in a hot shed, in isolation, at an Amish puppy mill. He was 3 months old. Bungee was petrified of normal outdoor noises until he was about 2 years old. His resulting anxiety has greatly diminished allowing his sweet personality to take center stage. And then there’s Louie. No one knows exactly his story, but it was obvious that it was tragic.

Louie was rescued by the Stark County Sheriff’s Office (Dog Warden Division), running along I-77, a high traffic freeway. The Sargeant told us that Louie (aka Seventy-Seven), estimated to be 8 years old, was in bad shape. It was apparent that he had been neglected and likely abused by a male. Additionally, he had tested positive for heart worm plus was malnourished. If that’s not disturbing enough, our Veterinarian suspects that Louie was likely kept in a barn (or outdoor dog house) with limited access to water which has led to psychological issues…he gulps volumes of water as though it may be his last drink for days or even weeks. He also had no “basic commands” training nor exposure to other dogs nor toys nor access to the inside of a home. When we adopted Louie, we couldn’t even touch him due to trust issues.

Fast forward one year from his adoption day…the progress that Louie has made can only be described as incredible! He successfully recovered from heartworm without any long term organ damage. He’s a healthy weight, has a super shiny coat and his nose is no longer crusty from dehydration. As important, Louie is one happy Senior! He loves his couch cuddle time, follows us everywhere, loves being kissed on his head and he can’t get enough back, bum and belly rubs. He’s learned certain commands but not all, which is ok. Sometimes you just need to meet dogs where they’re at. The best happiness indicator…Louie’s propeller tail is in constant wagging motion! We are so very proud of our handsome frosty face Louie! He truly inspires us, each and every day, to continue with our mission!
