Our Story

Each and every unique soul that has entered our home, has been a gift that has filled our hearts with infinite love, joy and cherished memories.

Our Story - How It Began:

Shakira & Gwen

PupKeepers, founded by us (Paul Takach/Gwen Walsh), organically evolved from our love of dogs since our childhood days. My husband and I, each with our own dogs, met and eventually blended our 4-legged family. At first, we cared for 2 shelter dogs. As our dog knowledge and experience grew, so did our family. Today we’re caring for 11 dogs, soon to be 12.

Our Results

Over the course of our adult life, we have dedicated our lives to providing a loving home and quality care to 25 shelter dogs (past and present). Our safe haven has welcomed shelter dogs who have hailed from a variety of situations – dogs that have been abused, dogs that have been dumped, dogs that have been scheduled for euthanasia, dogs with anxiety challenges, dogs with physical disabilities and medical issues, dogs who are adults, dogs who are seniors and dogs discarded by heartless puppy mills.

Throughout our adult life, our mission and passion have been unwavering and the rewards have been immeasurable

Our Time & Funding Investment

To date, the two of us have self-funded all shelter dog adoption expenses — from the time that each pup joined our family through end of life including euthanasia, the return of our beloved dog’s individual ashes plus paw prints. Additionally, each dog has been commemorated with a carved stone that has included his/her name plus birth and death years, that we’ve incorporated into our backyard Dog Memorial. The related costs have been and continue to be significant. They include: adoption fees, all medical care, medicines (including Heartgard, Apoquel, Probiotics, Simparica, vaccinations, calming aids such as CBD oil), ER trips, surgeries, annual check-ups, nail trimming, dry and wet food, coats, pee pads, diapers, washable shorts, leashes, collars, name tags, metal water and food bowls, enrichment toys, crates, regular and orthopedic beds and cots, dog gates, blankets, stretchers, car ramps, belly supports, cleaning supplies and equipment, storage units, Wyze pet cameras, artificial dog turf and periodic training specific to unique behavioral issues. Expenses is just one part of the equation. We both invest the lion’s share of our waking hours tending to our dogs and their environmental needs: filling their bowls/feeding them, refreshing their water, taking them outdoors to eliminate, conducting their group play sessions, spending “quiet time” with them, cleaning up dog accidents, taking them to the Veterinarian, doing the dog laundry and sweeping, vacuuming and mopping the tile dog floor areas. That leaves us with small blocks of time to tend to our own personal needs, household and yard chores plus errands.

We have absolutely no regrets with the lifestyle that we have chosen. We continue to be unrelenting in our mission, and our passion to provide a loving home to shelter dogs continues to burn with an inextinguishable flame.

Our Story - How It Can Continue:

Our Moving Forward Plan:

If people like us don’t continue adopting dogs, who are languishing in shelters, who will?

Given our ages, the day has come when we must be honest with ourselves. Even though we’re both very active Seniors, we need some “bench strength” to assist us so we may continue with our endeavors. As a starting point, we actively searched for and found a part-time, contracted, dog-experienced Operations Assistant who is “learning the ropes” of our in-home operation. Rather than withdraw funds from our established Pet Trust (when we both pass away our dogs would be 100% cared for), we are selling stained glass suncatchers (made by us), organizing fundraisers, seeking donations plus submitting grant requests to cover contractor costs. We hope that, especially during this tragic and epidemic-level period of dog dumping, backyard breeding and puppy mill proliferation, organizations and people with huge hearts, a love of dogs and a genuine appreciation for our mission, will help us fund our “extra pair of hands” Operations Assistant so we may continue adopting shelter dogs as space permits.

Thank you for reading our story!
